How to Measure for Shades

Measuring for window shades takes very little time or effort, but to do it right, you need to understand a bit about how a shade actually works.

Window roller shades are spring-loaded so that they roll up or down and lock in the chosen position, utilizing support brackets at either end of the shade. You mount these support brackets on the inside of the window stops. Note: One bracket has a hole into which a round shade support is inserted; the opposite bracket has a slot to receive the flat support on the other end of the shade.

Replacement Window Shade
If you're replacing an old shade, all you need to do is measure the width of the old roller from end to end, including the metal tips, and then measure the length of the shade fully extended.

Use these measurements to order a new shade of the same width and length.

New Window Shade Installation
To measure for a new shade, place a measuring tape (or yardstick) across the top of the window (side-to-side), with one end on the inside upper window stop and the other extended across to the stop on the other side. Once measured, you will want to order a shade that is 1/8-inch smaller than the measurement.

To determine the length of your new shade, measure the inside of the frame and then subtract 1/8 inch to find the correct length.

Tip: You can cut or have a professional cut a shade that is too long; however, there is nothing you can do about a shade that is too short, so keep this in mind when you measure the length of the shade.
